Hi friends,
As cyclists in the Cabarrus County and Charlotte region, we are all
familiar with the Veloshine Race team and the people associated with
them. A few years ago, several of their members and friends were
involved in a hit and run incident on their normal Wednesday group ride.
The court date for the accused is finally coming up next week. Jeff
Viscount from Weekly rides sums it up well:
"So a while back several of our cycling friends were involved in a
horrific crash where a young motorist crossed the center line and went
head on into their pace line scattering them all about the road like rag
dolls. One cyclist was actually pinned under the car that had hit them
and dragged thru a roadside ditch before breaking free. Thankfully no
one was killed. The driver left the scene only to turn himself in hours
later. This case is coming to trial next week and yes the driver is
fighting the charges. Tim Sigmon was injured that day along with several
others from his team. Tim is asking for support from our community. *The
DA feels that a courtroom full of concerned cyclists will be helpful in
getting this driver to face the consequences of his actions.* The DA has
stated that this case could set a precedent in NC law. *Was it one
impact/collision, or 6-separate?* Jury selection begins on Tuesday the
5th with the trial to start immediately after that. The judge has
refused request for continuances so they expect this to all be over with
by Thursday. If you can be present during the trial please reach out to
Tim for more details. Thanks."
*From Tim: "Jury selection starts about 9am Tuesday Feb 5th....trial to
begin immediately after. Could perhaps go into Thursday afternoon or
Friday. Cabarrus County Courthouse 2nd Floor Superior courtroom."
*
**I would encourage all who can possibly attend, come and show your
support. This can be a precedent setting case that can dictate how
future hit and run prosecutions are handled and judged in the whole of
North Carolina and possibly other states. Your support is greatly needed.*
