I did the Preservation Ride yesterday and what a ride it was. I would recommend this ride to anyone looking for great challenge. The overall ride profile is extremely deceiving due to the climb up Skyuka Mtn leads you to believe the rest of the ride is flat. Hah, Fat Chance. It is continuous rolling hills, but for every little climb there is great stretches of reward. Its like doing intervals for 80 miles:).

The optional climb up Skyuka Mtn is everything most of us can take. Its not as ridiculous as Sassafras, but you will be very happy to see the summit. Now the descent is "Fill Your Shorts Fast!" and unforgiving while extremely tight switchbacks. There were a couple guys that destroyed their carbon rims riding the brakes to the bottom. Even with the crazy speeds I like to enjoy descending it was a test in timing of the brakes. If it would have been wet surfaces I think there would have been people walking their bikes down. (I've never seen that before.) My hands were cramping by the bottom gripping and releasing break so intensely. Adrenaline rush at its best, I loved it.

I just love how unpredictable riding in groups can be especially charity rides and its the reason I do it so often. Yesterday the pace line slowed abruptly and took a great route through the ditch, but it gave those behind me reaction time. As LUCK would have it I hit a bump that launched me right back up on the road to drop right back into the pace line. No one crashed so all was good.:)

Then I had a bee flew right in my mouth and stung me which I worried might swell up my thoat, but that didn't happen. When I got to the top of Skyuka Mtn I sat on a rock that was covered with some kind of large biting ants that got under my jersey and helmet. That had some very high entertainment value for anyone riding behind me for quite a few miles.

The Preservation Ride will definitely be on my ride calendar again.
