It rained all night at the USFS campground and all the next day I really
don't like taking down a tent in the rain after I pull the rain fly off
every thing gets wet through the mesh top before it can be rolled up that
makes for damp conditions the next night I had written some of this before
and sent it before I saw ihad no service I went 58 miles to get to Lochsa
Lodge the next are that had food the people were very nice they allow
bicycle and motorcycle riders to tent in their yard nice place good food
and a grocery store it rained all night I met William from Scotland and
Mark fromEast Coast Mark was heading West I had breakfast with him William
is heading East He finally took his tent down in the rain he had ridden 112
miles the day before and now wanted to make it over Lolo Pass and onto
Missoula his tent must have 15pounds of water in it he left and still I
stalled hoping that the rain would let up and it was getting colder I
finally took the tent down and packed it on my bike dripping wet soon after
leaving I started to climb to Lola pass it continued to rain and the water
on the road going down hill made it appear I was pedaling upstream the cars
passing often splashed water on me I didn't bring long pants so my bare
legs took a beating I made it to the top 5235 feet there is a welcome
center as that is also the Montana State Line they had hot chocolate which
I much enjoyed met a gal from Madison WI she had come up the other side
name Rae in her sixties and loved climbing don't understand those kind of
people I continued east and came to Lolo Hot Springs ther was a mini sort
of hippie deadhead Woodstock type of event going on in the field across the
highway pouring down rain and very loud music coming from a sea of tents
and makeshift shelters the hot springs is a resort and bar restaurant I
went into the restaurant to get something to eat and warm up it was full of
the crazies from across the highway they were a friendly group and I must
have fit right in two guys I met had driven from Seattle to the festival
they gave me a small rock said it was dusty quartz and it would bring me
good luck on my journey
I hope it will just stop raining I sat at the bar and finally got waited on
very busy I ordered fish and chips and had to pay upfront as people were
walking out without paying I couldn't imagine that loving group of people
doing such a dastardly thing but she assured me it was true
After eating it was time to face reality that bike touring does not get out
of riding in all kinds of weather as I left the parking lot and crossed the
highway ther was a fellow cyclist standing over his bike I stopped and said
ther was no rooms he said he just found that out I said the is a motel in
Lolo which is 26 miles away it is getting colder and raining harder and
what is a bicyclist supposed to do well Trevor said do you want to share a
room in Lolo? My answer was lead out
We rode hard as I have ridden on this we really wanted that room we made it
in record time and Trevor said that made it 125 miles he had done that day
we found William McGuire was staying here also we had a mini reunion as
Trevor had met him previously
Well got to get ready the three of us heading go Missoula now
