FAQ's

  • Do I need to be a member to participate in your club rides?

No!  Membership is not necessary to join us on our rides.  While we do encourage everyone to sign up with the club because membership does provide a bit of liability coverage in case of an incident, we don't have a problem if you don't.

  • What type of bike do you recommend for your group rides?

We recommend a road bike with drop bars.  With that being said, we have had people ride with us on hybrids, fixies, single speeds, and mountain bikes. It all depends on how fit you are and how fast you can ride.  The most important part of the bike, is the engine that drives it.
  • Do I need an expensive or fancy bike to join your rides?

No!  Though an expensive bike is nice, it's absolutely not necessary to ride with us.  The most important thing is that you have a bike that fits you and is in good working order.

  • What is the minimum gear I need?

    • Helmet. Don’t ever ride without one. It can mean the difference between a bad headache and being a vegetable. Make sure it fits well.
    • Water bottle. Get one with a cage that attaches to your bike. Regular bottles don’t fit in this cage, btw. An alternative is a hydration backpack. You really only need hydration tools once you start cycling beyond an hour, but it’s good to have just in case.
    • Pump.  A floor pump of some kind is necessary to inflate your tires before each ride.  A small portable pump to carry with you is nice for emergencies but not mandatory.
    • Repair kit. A simple repair kit would include a spare inner tube, 2 tire levers, a multi-tool for bikes, and 2 CO2 cartridges and inflator, all in a small bag that attaches to the bike.

There are a lot of other items that will make riding easier and more enjoyable, like shoes and pedals, bike computers, Lycra clothing, etc, but those will become more important once you get out on your first couple of rides.

  • Do you ride year round?

Yes!  We are blessed to be in a climate where the weather allows us to ride throughout the year.  With proper clothing, you can ride comfortable in colder weather.  Realistically, once it gets into the lower 20's and teens, it gets less enjoyable, but we have ridden in some pretty darn cold temps.

  • What happens to the evening rides after the time changes?

Once the time changes we convert the ride to night rides or trainer sessions.  Now that the price of high quality lights has come down so much in the last few years, it's now possible to outfit your bike with lights bright enough to rival some cars and safely ride on the road and be extremely visible at night.  Some riders actually feel safer riding at night than in the daytime.  Check our rides pages, and Facebook pages and mailing lists for seasonal ride updates.
